Sirius About Sleep

For the third consecutive year, Unit ¾ VCE Psychology students participated in an incursion with a Sleep Scientist from Epworth Hospital. Throughout the term, students have been exploring content about ‘Sleep’, an altered state of consciousness that we spend approximately 1/3 of our lives in! Sleep is such a fascinating topic for the students as it is applicable to all of their lives.

Each evening we progress through 5 stages of sleep. In each of those stages there are certain physiological measures that indicate which stage of sleep we are in. Some of those measures are: electrical activity of the brain, heart, muscles, and muscles surrounding the eyes.

Today, the class got the opportunity to see how scientists study patients who have problems with their sleep. We recreated our very own sleep lab in the C Block! Our patient for the day was Sofia and she had the pleasurable task of, sleeping! Sofia was hooked up to a range of physiological devices prior to sleeping. As Sofia drifted off into sleep, the class was able to observe the physiological changes occurring as she progressed from being awake to being asleep.

It was a very informative and engaging incursion that consolidated the students understanding of concepts related to sleep.
